QUALIFICATIONS
The following list includes the qualifications and requirements that are necessary to apply as a Volunteer Firefighter Probationary Member. At the time of application, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Graduated from high school or possess a GED certificate
- Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Illinois Class B Non-CDL Driver’s License
- Located within 5 miles of the firehouse.
HIRING PROCESS
The Firefighter Trainee hiring process is composed of various steps, each ensuring that we are hiring the best and most capable individuals to serve our community! For more information regarding each step, view the corresponding section below.
Application

Interview Board
Candidates who meet the requirements for hiring will first be invited to a selection interview. This interview will consist of three members is often more interactive and dialogue-based.
The goal of this portion of the hiring process is to get to know you better and determine how well of a match you would be for the Schaeferville Fire Protection District
Interview feedback is given to the Fire Chief to consider and decide who he will invite to participate in the Background process.
Background
All candidates will undergo a background, including employment history, education, criminal history, driving record, and reference checks. Each candidate will complete a Personal History Statement. The Fire Chief or his representative will review the background information and make a decision to move the application to the next portion of the hiring process.
New Member Selection
The final step in the hiring process is the selection. Candidates that successfully completed each step of the hiring process and are determined by the Chief to receive an offer to join the Schaeferville Fire Protection District will receive a phone call extending an invite.
PROBATIONARY PROCESS
Firefighting Certification
All new members will be enrolled in an online learning portal to complete classroom firefighter, basic safety, and human resources training. Additional hands on training will be completed on training nights or through partner programs available through local, state, and federal resources.
CPR Certification
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required within the first 3 months of employment. You can learn more about CPR certifications searching online for American Heart Association – BLS Provider courses
EMS Certification
Completion of an approved Illinois Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training course with the appropriate certification may be required as a condition of employment.
